AP Language and Composition

Welcome to Advanced Placement Language and Composition.  Are you in for a treat this year!  In addition to receiving top-quality instruction in composition and a survey of American literature, you may also opt to take the AP Language and Composition exam in May for possible college credit toward your English 101 or 102 requirements.  Check your college's AP score policies by visiting the link below and then browsing by the first letter of your college's name.

Course Description:

This is an advanced level composition course equivalent to a freshman college composition course.  In the course, students will learn advanced writing techniques through a study of style and rhetoric.  Close readings of a variety of American texts including novels, speeches, essays, memoirs, letters, historical accounts, journals, and articles will form the basis of our analysis.  In addition, students will produce depthful, analytic writing which responds to the rhetorical purposes, stances, styles, and techniques of professional writers.

It is recommended that you purchase your own novels so that you can annotate them for possible discussion questions, quiz questions, and your own thoughts.  In addition, you can begin building your personal reading library which may be useful to you now as a lover of books and in the future in college.

Books needed for the year in order:

The Jungle, by Sinclair

The Great Gatsby, by Fitzgerald

Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Hurston

The Tipping Point, by Gladwell

The Good, Good Pig, by Montgomery

Walden, by Thoreau

One novel of choice for book groups

Reading quizzes every Friday will reward those of you who complete your outside reading and will assess your progress in the novels.  Occasionally, we will have a Socratic Circle in which we discuss the book for a participation grade.  As this is a compostition course, the reading assigned is to be completed outside of class.  If this is a burden, consider taking a course with less outside reading.  The purpose of the reading is to provide the exposure to literature and American writers which is a high school requirement.
